Washed Out – “Eyes Be Closed”

A funny thing happened at Pitchfork Fest last year: Panda Bear – easily one of the most anticipated acts of the festival by myself and just about everyone else – played a set that largely incited disappointment and, well, boredom.  The next afternoon, Washed Out (Ernest Greene) played to a surprisingly huge crowd that prompted many people (in the crowd, on twitter, etc.) to declare in some way that this was the kind of set they wished Panda Bear had played.  I concurred wholeheartedly.  Coincidentally, the producer of Merriweather Post Pavilion, Ben Allen, was enlisted to man the boards for Washed Out’s debut LP and his touch is immediately noticable.  While “Eyes Be Closed” may not be much of a departure from Life of Leisure, it feels more vast and nuanced.  This is chillwave gone Imax.

Within and Without is out 7/12 via Sub Pop.
