Low – “Try To Sleep” & “Especially Me”

Full disclosure: I haven’t been the best at keeping up with Low over the years.  In fact, I’ve never been much of a fan at all.  Sure, I’ve heard bits and pieces of their albums here and there, but I never heard anything that really stuck with me.  For whatever reason, I decided to give their forthcoming album, C’mon, a serious listen and I’ve been incredibly smitten since the first spin – so smitten that its become one my favorite albums of 2011 thus far.  Since their inception in the early ’90s, Low has been tagged as one of the originators of “slowcore” – a term which doesn’t really mean anything anymore.  They’ve been lumped in with bands as great and diverse as Codeine, Spacemen 3, Galaxie 500, Yo La Tengo, Dirty Three and Red House Painters.  To my ears, Spiritualized (specifically Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space) is the most apt comparison to Low circa 2011. C’mon is by no means as huge sounding, although it does have its moments (centerpiece “Nothing But Heart”).  Best of all, C’mon sports a fair amount of variety: “Try to Sleep” finds the middle ground between Radiohead’s “No Surprises” and Pet Sounds, and “Especially Me” simmers like a union between Yo La Tengo and Kronos Quartet.

C’mon is out 4/12 via Sub Pop.
