Wild Beasts – “Albatross”

On their excellent sophomore album, Two Dancers, Wild Beasts smoothed out some of the divisive idiosyncrasies of their debut, Limbo, Panto, and the end result was lithe, propulsive art-rock that brought more folks into their tent.  If “Albatross” is any indication, the band may be smoothing things out even further on their forthcoming third album, Smother.  The song could have fit in nicely on Two Dancers, but it’s especially somber – piano-led for the most part and lacking the busy rhythms that Wild Beasts are known for.  While it may feel slightly underwhelming on first listen, multiple spins reveal it to be a gorgeous tune on par with much of Two Dancers.

Smother is out 5/10 via Domino.
