Julianna Barwick – “The Magic Place”

When I spoke to Julianna Barwick last year, she alluded to a desire to fold more instrumentation into her largely a cappella soundscapes.  Her debut LP, The Magic Place, definitely delivers on that front: bits of piano, synthesizer, guitar, bass, etc. are subtly dispersed throughout the album.  All the touchstones commonly brought up re: Barwick’s music (Panda Bear, Brian Eno and Cocteau Twins) are still very much in place, but her compositions feel more concrete and memorable than ever before.  So much so that The Magic Place has stealthily become one of my fave records of 2011 (so far).  Check out the sublime title track below.

If you’re unfamiliar with Barwick’s unique approach to music, check out my review of her last EP, Florine, for more clarity.

The Magic Place is out now on Asthmatic Kitty.
