Explosions In The Sky – “Trembling Hands”

It’s been four long years since EITS last released an album (2007’s All of A Sudden I Miss Everyone) and I was beginning to worry that they would follow the path of diminishing returns that their post-rock brethren have taken before them (Sorry, Mogwai and GY!BE, but its true).  Instead of delivering a watered-down retread of their past glories, “Trembling Hands” is the last thing I expected from EITS: the closest thing to a pop song that they’ve ever released.  Clocking in at a lean 3:31, there’s no time for build and release.  Instead, its a thunderous succession of bigger and bigger releases driven by drummer Chris Hrasky’s Earth-cracking Bonham shots.  As my girlfriend astutely pointed out, it might be the first EITS song that makes you want to dance.

Take Care, Take Care, Take Care is out 4/26 via Temporary Residence.
