I haven’t always been the biggest fan of tUnE-yArDs, the brainchild of Merrill Garbus.  My first exposure to Garbus and her music was as the opening act for the Dirty Projectors back in 2009.  For whatever reason – probably just my giddiness to see the Projectors – I had a hard time warming up to Garbus’ performance and kinda wrote her off as some sort of novelty act.  “Bizness”, the first single from the forthcoming w h o k i l l, immediately endeared itself to me and made me regret my rash, careless assessment of Garbus.  Her time spent touring the Dirty Projectors seems to have paid off. “Bizness” incorporates that band’s trademark hocketing vocal runs and Afro-pop grooves.  Best of all, Garbus’ voice now sounds huskier, stronger and more confident – sounding so much like Nina Simone at times that it’s a little eerie and totally enthralling.
