Light Asylum – “Dark Allies” & “Shallow Tears”

About halfway through my first time hearing Light Asylum’s “Dark Allies”, I was ready to buy anything the band released.  Besides being one of the best things I’ve heard all year, the song also fulfilled a fantasy of sorts: Joy Division/New Order if Ian Curtis had never died.  Although the band’s singer/drummer, Shannon Funchess, is female, she possesses a deep contralto that conjures both Curtis and Grace Jones.  Her cohort, Bruno Coviello (synths), provides the rest of the Factory magic.  I admit that’s a reductive description, but it’s also very apt and haunts everything the band has recorded.  Of course, there are many modern points of reference too: The Knife, Portishead and Zola Jesus are all kindred spirits.  Previously, Funchess has appeared on Telepathe and TV on the Radio songs, but Light Asylum is all hers – a showcase for her wounded howl and bleak synthscapes.

In Tension EP is currently sold out, but check the band’s website for a restock.

i am with you on Dark Allies. it’s a song that reminds me of one of the clubs that SNL’s Stefan visits. It’s got alien lazers, nuclear lightning, vampire beats and a vincent price thrilleresque voice over.

love this song.
