Diamond Rings – “Something Else”

I first heard John O’Regan’s musical alter-ego Diamond Rings on a 7″ he split with fellow Ontarians, PS I Love You (who made my #11 album of 2010), early last year.  His contribution to the 7″, “All Yr Songs”, was a humble gem, but it did not prepare me for the greater pleasures on his debut LP, Special Affections.  While O’Regan obviously has an outward affection for glam, he mainly crafts sturdy synth-pop that nods strongly to early Magnetic Fields and Handsome Furs.  Album highlight “Something Else” is especially Furs-y.

Random note: Robyn handpicked Diamond Rings to open her current North American tour.  Being a fan of both, I can definitely see aesthetic overlaps between the two, but it’s a pleasant surprise nonetheless.  Looking forward to seeing both on Saturday.

Special Affections is out now via Secret City.
