Sharon Van Etten – “Don’t Do It” & “Love More”

At this point, it’s a little surprising that Sharon Van Etten isn’t the well-known/more-acclaimed artist she deserves to be.  Besides releasing two albums of lush, heartbreaking folk-rock, she’s been covered by Bon Iver, appeared on The Antlers’ Hospice and is currently recording an album with The National.  Last year’s Epic found her working with a full band for the first time and it served her well – they give Van Etten’s tortured songs a muscularity that only heightens their emotional intensity.  Like all her aforementioned collaborators, she has a measured, mature approach to her tales of relationship woe.  Elliott Smith is the most obvious reference point here, but where Smith was inclined towards Beatlesque pop, Van Etten’s aesthetic is rawer and less genre-specific.  The hazy “Don’t Do It” and harmonium-led “Love More” are my two favorite tracks from Epic. I implore you to listen.

Epic is out now via Ba Da Bing.
