Games – “Strawberry Skies” & “Planet Party”

Like Mark McGuire’s Living With Yourself, Games’ debut EP,  That We Can Play, is a 2010 release that I slept on until very recently.  It’s also another side project of sorts.  Games is Oneohtrix Point Never’s Daniel Lopatin and his childhood friend Joel Ford (Tiger City).  I’ve become a big fan of OPN over the last year (Returnal was one of my favorite albums of 2010), so I’m inclined to check out anything Lopatin does at this point.  Games is a pretty huge departure from his usual dark, droning electro.  Instead, Games are unapologetically retro – reveling in the kind of ’80s synth-funk that occasionally skirts Bowie/Prince territory.  Lopatin’s characteristic OPN synth tones bleed through frequently which lends a sinister undertone to these otherwise upbeat, celebratory jams.

That We Can Play is out via Hippos In Tanks.
