Smith Westerns – “Weekend”

There’s nothing more exciting than discovering/falling in love with a young band that seems destined for an endless upward trajectory.  Conversely, there’s nothing more depressing than watching said band fall flat on their face with the dreaded sophomore slump.  Dye It Blonde, the sophomore LP from Smith Westerns, is quite the opposite – a quantum leap forward in almost every regard.  It’s the sound of a band delivering on all their amassed hype/potential/good will. They just completely fucking nailed it.  On their sterling debut, the band was clearly haunted by the ghosts of Marc Bolan and Mick Ronson, and those spirits remain on Dye It Blonde.  However, they’re joined by another that threatens to overshadow them both: George Harrison.  There is an unmistakable, Beatlesque quality to the entire album, but the melodies and guitar tones feel specifically redolent of the quiet Beatle.  “Weekend” is as much Britpop as it is British Invasion, and its clearly Top of the Pops material.

Dye It Blonde is out 1/18 via Fat Possum.
