Frankie Rose and The Outs – “Little Brown Haired Girls”

After spending the last few years as the rock steady backbone of The Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts and Dum Dum Girls, Frankie Rose is finally taking the lead with her very own band.  Despite paying her dues as a drummer, she’s been honing her songwriting chops all the while (she wrote the Vivian Girls’ best song, “Where Do You Run To?”).  And, with “Little Brown Haired Girls” she straight-up schools all her past employers at their own game – namely, fuzzy garage-pop.  However, Rose and the Outs go beyond the trad, expected ’60s girl-group/garage references and fold ’90s shoegaze and the Velvet Underground into the mix.  It should also be noted that her time spent keeping time shows here as the song unfurls in a giddy, propulsive rush.

Frankie Rose and The Outs is out 9/21 via Slumberland.
