John Cale – “All My Friends” (LCD Soundsystem cover)

I haven’t had the opportunity to talk much about LCD Soundsystem’s phenomenal new album, This Is Happening, beyond my obligatory “Drunk Girls” post.  So, consider this me putting it into the public record: This Is Happening is a serious album-of-the-year contender and its opening track “Dance Yrself Clean” might just be this year’s “My Girls”.  Ok, I’m done with the hyperbole (for now).  Since I’m on an LCD high and preparing to get my mind blown by them tonight, I thought I’d share this gem I stumbled upon a few days ago.  Somehow, I missed the fact that LCD Soundsystem commissioned the Velvet Underground’s John Cale to record this sterling cover of “All My Friends” for the titular EP.  Cale maintains the original’s muscular motorik throb while cloaking it in his trademark ambient viola drone.  Since Cale is 68, there is an added weight of acute mortality in the delivery of lines like “I wouldn’t trade one stupid decision/For another five years of life” and, later, the stirring coda of “If I could see all my friends tonight.”  It’s a credit to Cale’s tremendous talent that his cover sounds just as euphoric and life-affirming as LCD’s original.
