Alaska In Winter – “Crystal Tears”

Brandon Bethancourt has been recording luminous electronic pop under the alias Alaska In Winter for a few years now, but he’s never garnered the attention and acclaim he deserves.  You know, your typical unsung hero story.  Plus – full disclosure time – I have a rather strong sentimental attachment to his song “Speed Boat To Heaven”.  Along with the obvious touchstones of Daft Punk and Kraftwerk, there are slivers of Hot Chip, Animal Collective and LCD Soundsystem in the mix.  Occasionally, he even weaves acoustic instrumentation (banjo, accordion, ukulele) into his compositions.  His new album, Space Eagle, is the “soundtrack” to the titular (fictional) film.  Bethancourt explained it thusly:

Alaska in Winter has finally finished Space Eagle [the motion picture soundtrack] with nothing but synthesizers and lasers- a musical story intended for the film, “Space Eagle”, which is due to be released winter of 1986.

I’ve only managed to get a couple spins in, but “Crystal Tears” feels like the clear-cut standout.  It’s exactly as advertised: an intergalactic synth jam steeped in romantic yearning.  It certainly could have been a hit in 1986, or on the soundtrack to Tron.

Space Eagle is available now via CDBaby, itunes and a rad cassette tape version can be bought here.
