The National @ The Bell House, Brooklyn, NY (3/11/10)

I was lucky enough to get a ticket for The National’s “secret” show at The Bell House (capacity: 500) where they debuted most, if not all, of the songs from their forthcoming album, High Violet, which won’t be out until May 11.  Unlike Boxer, which sustained a mood from beginning to end, the High Violet songs were a varied bunch.  The new songs were an array of moods, textures and tempos that recalled Alligator‘s (relative) breadth of style.  For the most part, the songs were immediately endearing and felt a bit more “epic” than The National’s past output.  The band was in excellent form with a small crew of auxiliary players (Padma Newsome and Doveman amongst them).  Frontman Matt Berninger was sporting a sweet new beard and drank all night from what appeared to be a bottomless glass of wine.  Sadly, “All The Wine” was not performed.  In attendance: Adam Sandler and Michael Stipe.  Crazy.
