Caribou – “Odessa”

When we last heard from Caribou’s Dan Snaith, he was mashing the ’60s psych of The Zombies into the ’00s psych of Animal Collective on 2007’s Andorra.  On “Odessa”, the first single from his upcoming album, Swim, it seems clear that there won’t be much ’60s psychin’ on the record.  The slippery dance grooves of “Odessa” are pretty much without precedent in the Caribou catalogue.  In a statement about Swim, Snaith explained the impetus for his new sound:

“I got excited by the idea of making dance music that’s liquid in the way it flows back and forth, the sounds slosh around in pitch, timbre, pan… Dance music that sounds like it’s made out of water, rather than made out of metallic stuff like most dance music does.”

And sound fluid it does.

Swim is out 4/20 on Merge.
